After Your Extraction
Rest:
Rest for a few hours immediately after treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting
Rinsing:
Do NOT rinse your mouth at all on the day of surgery.
Avoid:
Sucking or interfering with the wound.
Smoking -the longer you can hold off the better.
Food:
For the rest of today eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the side of the surgery or extraction. Keep drinks cool or lukewarm. Avoid very hot, hard or chewy foods. Avoid alcohol for the rest of today as it can cause bleeding.
Pain Relief:
Any pain can be relieved by taking paracetamol (2 tablets every 4 hours), and/or ibuprofen. A combination of both usually works very well especially if taken before the numbness wears off.
Avoid disprin or aspirin or any pain medications containing these for 24 hours post dental surgery as they can cause bleeding.
Bleeding:
A slight ooze can be expected. If there is more bleeding, apply pressure with another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times. Please contact us if you are concerned about the amount of bleeding.
Cleaning your teeth:
Continue to brush your teeth normally but avoid brushing in the extraction area on the day of treatment. Return to normal brushing the following day.
Salty mouth washes the following day:
Begin mouth rinses using ½ teaspoon salt in a glass of very warm water. Hold in mouth without rinsing. Do this 2 or 3 times daily until you are able to brush that area normally again.
Please contact the surgery if pain increases at day 3-4 after the extraction or if there is any undue pain or bleeding.
